Vanek Not Practicing, Gaustad Does

Thomas Vanek was not on the ice for today's Sabre practice at the Pepsi Center in Amherst. The reason for Vanek's absense is not yet known. Paul Gaustad was practicing. Gaustad skated on a line with Mike Grier and Tim Kennedy.

We'll have more information after Coach Lindy Ruff addresses the media. Keep it locked to WGR 550.

Ruff sees team "turn the corner"

(WGR 550) -- Coming off two much-needed victories that happened to need overtime, Lindy Ruff sees his Buffalo Sabres team putting good things together.

"Every game is tight," Ruff said during his weekly 8 a.m. Tuesday appearance on The Howard Simon Show. "It was good to see us battle hard in both those contests. I thought our club turned the corner."

Kaleta's OT Winner Lifts Sabres Past Rangers 2-1

Patrick Kaleta probably wouldn't mind too much if the Sabres played at Madison Square Garden more than twice per season. The Buffalo native notched his third goal in two games at MSG, this one in overtime, to give the Sabres a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday. The win is Buffalo's second straight and puts them back in sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division.

Gaustad Skates On His Own

Sabres forward Paul Gaustad took the ice and skated on his own on Saturday morning, four days after sustaining an upper-body injury against the Penguins. Gaustad appeared to suffer the injury to his hand during a third period fight with Mike Rupp during the loss.

The Sabres, coming off an overtime win over the Flyers on Friday to snap a two-game losing skid, will visit the New York Rangers on Sunday.
