Team USA soccer and MLB Interleague Play

June 29th, 2009 by Raph

Soccer

Kudos to Team USA for a resilient battle against the Brazilians in the FIFA Confederation Cup! Team USA jumped to an early 2-0 lead before the half, but quickly let it slip away in the second half.

Was it exhaustion? Or cocky-ness?

All we know is…it’ll be tough to return for another run.

MLB

In baseball news, my Yankees came to Flushing, NY with broom sticks in hand! Boy, was that a great series (for Yankees fans)!

The Mets need to tidy up their bullpen and prevent more walks. K-Rod also needs to slow the game down. It seems as if he works too fast, therefore he overthrows or gets wild on the mound.

I am sooooo proud of Mariano Rivera for notching career save #500! This is the work of mastery and durability of a Hall of Famer! Plus, he got his first ever career RBI. How about that! Perhaps, he may join the elite “500 Club” (500 saves/500 RBIs)…kidding.

If you missed it…

Interleague play: Yankees v Mets

June 15th, 2009 by Raph

What a great weekend in baseball! So many good games, pitching matchups, defensive plays, errors, wins, losses…you name it!

Few of the highlights of my weekend watching baseball:

1)   The Yankees unexpected win against the Mets on Friday – Game 1 of the Subway Series.

2)   Milton Bradley of the Cubs tossing the baseball into the stands with only 2 outs, causing runners to score. (Oy!)

3)   The Yankees clobbering Mets’ LHP Johan Santana for a thrashing of the Mets 15-0!

Mets vs Yankees graphic on scoreboard before the very first Subway Series game at new Yankee Stadium, 6/12/09 by Bari D.

Of course, being a Yankees fan, I focused my attention to the Subway Series. The first time in the new Yankee Stadium, the series was as unpredictable as ever. Clearly, both the Yankees and Mets have issues with their ball clubs, specifically their pitching staff and in some cases the defense.

Second baseman Luis Castillo was the only person to blame for the Mets’ in their heartbreaking loss with 2 outs in the 9th. What should have been a routine pop-up from the bat of Alex Rodriguez became a two-run error that gave the Bronx Bombers the lead and walk-off win. Seriously??!? That is Little League shenanigans on the Mets! I coach Little League and I have seen better plays from 10 year-olds!

Then on Sunday, Johan Santana, who usually has stellar outings, got rocked by the Bombers indeed! Hit after Home Run after hit, Santana couldn’t even last through the 4th inning. How embarrassing!  The Mets need to re-evaluate their ball club…there are LOTS of holes to fill!

The Yankees, although escaped the series with a couple wins, need to evaluate their club as well. If they want to win against teams who are contending for October baseball, pitching needs to man up! Wang, CC, and Joba need to take leadership roles in the rotation…Burnett, too. On paper, the rotation looks amazing! However, it’s the standings that count in the end.

The Yanks have a relatively easy week ahead of them, facing the worst team in baseball…The Washington Nationals. If the Yankees lose that series, they’re in deep trouble…

Yankees vs. Red Sux

June 9th, 2009 by Raph

I just wanted to write a quick blog about the impending series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sux.

This New York team is WAAAAAAAYYYYY better than the first bout between the two.

All I can say is…Boston, you better be ready.

Yankees 4; Red Sox 3 by rgusick.

We’re goin’ streakin’!!! Come on!!!

May 29th, 2009 by Raph

Let’s Go, Yankees!

Yes, it’s about damn time the Yankees are into old form! These are the Bronx Bombers I remember back in the late 90’s…scoring runs, good/decent/consistent pitching, and making magical comebacks. (see: Yankees 3 straight Walk-offs against the Twins recently)

Chien-Ming Wang had a dominant performance in his relief outing on Wednesday against Texas-2 solid innings–went 26 pitches and 18 of them were strikes!

The team is also coming back to 100% health–Posada returned to the lineup after his rehab, and Melky returns in time for the Cleveland-New York series at Progressive Field. (I still call it the Jake! Boo, Coporate America!)

New York is only a half game behind in the AL East going into Friday’s game with Cleveland. (I knew the Toronto Blue Jays weren’t the real thing…weak April schedule!)

Come All-Star Break…We’re going to see the old Bronx Bombers back in “full swing!”

I bet all my Yankees memorabilia on it!

Manny…are you kidding me?!?!

May 7th, 2009 by Raph

So, everyone probably knows that Manny Ramirez has been suspended from Major League Baseball for 50 games. It was because of a banned substance that WASN’T a steroid! Sources say he allegedly used a ‘fertility drug’ that was on the banned substances list by the MLB.

Now, Manny has always been a great baseball player (skills-wise), but something doesn’t add up here…and I don’t know who to believe right now– Manny or the media? We’ll have to wait it out…

I (and most baseball fans) just hope this doesn’t further tarnish the legacy of our pastime. We live in an era of cheaters and legitimates who play a game that most of us love and cherish, and this brings forth the question–’Are all baseball players cheaters?’

What about the Derek Jeters, Ken Griffey Jr.’s, and Albert Pujols of our time? Are they, too, cheaters of the game? Or are they cheated by it?

Put that broom away…we got the “Swisher!”

April 29th, 2009 by Raph

Ok, so the Yankees didn’t have the best weekend ever. They were swept by the Red Sox in a sloppy weekend. Well, Burnett and Pettite had decent outings, but it was the bullpen and lack of offense that called for the demise of the Yankees.

Now, it’s still early in the season…but, COME ON!

Sports’ biggest rivalry and it felt like a lop-sided battle! I was turned off…of course, my opinion is biased, I am a Yankees fan (ever since I can remember).

Joe Girardi and the Yankees need to produce and start getting hot for the summer stretch. With Alex Rodriguez returning shortly, hopefully the Yankee offense can bounce back.

By the All-Star Break, I want to see the Yankees on top in their division. The AL East this year looks tough–with a hot Toronto team, not to mention a wayy better Tampa Bay Rays team than years past, and of course, Boston.

Hopefully, I’ll get to see another “Boston Massacre” soon…

and I won’t have my broom ready, I’ll have my “Swisher!” (swiffer, get it???)

Opening Week and other stories

April 22nd, 2009 by Raph

Baseball has been interesting since the opening game between the Phillies and Braves. In one week, we experienced THREE different players hit for the cycle (hits for a single, double, triple, and Home Run), with one of them hitting a GRAND SLAM as part of the cycle– a rarity.

I am impressed with the baseball season so far. The Marlins are near-perfect, the Blue Jays are flyin’ in the AL East, and I’m VERY glad that we are all talkin’ about baseball, the game…not baseball, who did steroids. I am actually grateful for that!

Big games this weekend…most important series? Yankees/Red Sox.

The Yankees need to make sure their PITCHING is in order. Chien-Ming Wang has been ineffective so far this season, and Burnett didn’t fare too well against Cleveland.

This weekend’s series will put both teams to the test, and will give us a preview of what to expect for the rest of the season.

 HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Angels’ Pitcher Nick Adenhart…

April 10th, 2009 by Raph

A sad day in baseball…Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident in California just hours after his stellar performance on late Wednesday night, early Thursday morning. (See the entire story on espn.com)He was only 22.

It’s scary to think, I am also 22 and there is so much life ahead of you…and it’s gone in a blink of an eye.Appreciate what you have…and never take anything for granted.

Nick had a whole career ahead of him, and it was all gone in that car accident.

My prayers and thoughts are with the entire Adenhart family and Los Angeles Angels Ballclub, because a baseball team is just like a family.

Elite Eight Showdown Begins…

March 26th, 2009 by Raph

Ahh, yes…the time has come for the Elite Eight to compete for the National Championship. Now, I am not a big fan of basketball in general, but it ranks up higher than, let’s say, golf! And after the 6 OT Syracuse win a couple weeks back, it peaked my interest to watching the tourney this year.

Yes, you can say it.

Bandwagon.

You have to start somewhere!

Go ‘Cuse!
